SUYS - Frequently Asked Questions

  • WHAT KIND OF FILMS IS SUYS ACCEPTING FOR SUBMISSION?

We want to see anything that you send us. This means if you have recorded a film on your phone or a full animation done in a production studio we can show it. Any genre or convention is welcome. We believe the most independent films sometimes have the most to say. So dig out that 30 min romantic epic you made in your neighbour’s garage at age 10, your favourite part of a family video, or make something new you want to show. Find your vision and make it into film. If you believe it’s worth it, we might too. All are welcome!

  • WHAT SIZE AM I?

    X-Small: 1 min or less
Small: 1+ min to 10 min
Medium: 10+ min to 20 min
Large: 20+ min to 40 min

  • HOW ARE SUBMISSIONS SELECTED FOR SUYS?

All submissions sent will be considered and reviewed by committee. The committee will select films based on merit and eligibility. Committee decisions are final.

  • HOW CAN I TELL IF MY FILM HAS BEEN SELECTED?

SUYS will contact all submissions electronically to let you now the status of your submissions and placement in the Festival.

  • HOW IS SUYS PROGRAMMED?

SUYS is organized by length of film. X-SMALL, SMALL, MEDIUM, or LARGE. That means genres which you usually would not see together in one program package at a festival will run one after another based on length of the shorts...so to speak.

Categories will be supplied to audience prior to screening in the program guide and are required by each submission. Explicit sex, abusive language, or violence will be monitored and attention made to audience.

  • WHY SHORTS?

Shorts can compact a lot of information in a given time frame. They are fun, enjoyable, relaxing, comforting, and sometimes startling. They come in all shapes and sizes and create a mood based on style, materials, and craftsmanship. This is the only festival of its kind in Calgary willing to show films of varying calibers, experience, and form. The time frame allows less experienced productions a chance at screening their work to the public and being a part of a festival . We believe there is a community who might enjoy this, including us!

  • HOW DO I MAKE A FILM?

There are lots of ways and different technologies available for making films. All it takes is a vision, and some gumption.

Here are some resources to help you get started!

    • EMMEDIA: Gallery and Production Society http://www.emmedia.ca/
    • CALGARY PUBLIC LIBRARY - CREATION STATIONS, Central Public Library
      403-260-2600 for info.
    • CSIF – Calgary Society of Independent Filmmakers http://www.csif.org

  • HOW DO I GO TO SUYS?

Stay tuned to the website for the package and events you want to attend on the Festival page. When you see a package that interests you or you want to try something new, write down the date, time, and location. Now go there at that time and date. We will be there waiting for you with smiles and such.
